Police have been communicating with the climber but declined to say what his motive was.
He was speaking with officers through the holes cut in the side of the building.
Later Wednesday evening, Trump tweeted “Great job today by the NYPD in protecting the people and saving the climber”.
Police who received an emergency call around 3:30 pm (1930 GMT) initially believed they were dealing with someone who wanted to jump from the building. They also put an inflatable landing pad on East 56th Street between Madison and Fifth Avenues. “I’d rather not be recognizable”, said the man in the YouTube video, who goes by the username Leven Thumps.
“At no time did he express that he wanted to hurt anybody”, he said.
“Hello, Mr. Trump, do excuse my manner of appearance”. The reason I climbed your tower is to get your attention.
In the video, the man, wearing a hoodie and talking in a deep voice makes an appeal directly to Mr Trump. The authenticity of the video has not been confirmed, but was widely shared Wednesday.
Workers removed windows from the glass-faced, 58-storey skyscraper to prevent him from going higher.
The climber had started his ascent from a terrace area on the fifth floor and managed to initially evade police by climbing around an opened window and washer scaffold.
The man was undergoing psychiatric evaluation and would be arrested, police said.
He is expected to face several state charges from the Manhattan District Attorney’s office sometime overnight or Thursday morning, the sources said.
The man, whose identity is not yet known, began climbing the iconic building – home to both Donald Trump and his Republican presidential campaign – this afternoon.
The tower is headquarters to the Republican presidential nominee’s campaign and his business empire.
