USA swimmer Lochte robbed at gunpoint

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing. He had been staying in his hotel room and meant to go back to the USA soon.

Ryan Lochte was robbed at gunpoint in Rio de Janeiro with three other American swimmers on Sunday shortly after their Olympic competition. “I am honored to have represented the US here at the Rio Olympics and to win gold for my country alongside my teammates”.

They were also joined by Jimmy Feigen – who won gold alongside Michael Phelps in the 4x100m freestyle. He is a 12-time Olympic medalist.

Jeff Ostrow, Lochte’s attorney, however, asserts there is no doubt the robbery happened and exactly “the way he [Lochte] described it”. “I was like, ‘Whatever, ‘” he said.

“There have been various incidents over the past week that isolated aren’t a big deal, but when you look at it in the context that we’ve had a security incident nearly every day, it paints a more troubling picture”, Brocchetto said.

“These guys came out with a badge, a police badge, no lights, no nothing, just a police badge and they pulled us over”, Lochte told NBC News.

A spokesman for Brazilian Pereira told Reuters on Sunday Pereira had called Lochte after hearing reports the USA swimmer had been the victim of a gun-point robbery the night before.

“We obviously regret that the violence got so close to athletes”, Andrada said. All were believed to be wearing their U.S. Olympic team gear and their Olympic credentials.

“Absolutely not true”, International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams told reporters during the IOC daily briefing, saying he had been in touch with USOC.

Ileana Lochte, mother of Ryan Lochte, confirmed that his son was robbed.

Australian athletes were told not to wear their team uniforms and to tuck their accreditation inside their shirts when socializing during the evening. Wlodarczyk, who took silver in the event at the London 2012 Games, said the athletes struggled to cope with the heat inside the Olympic Stadium.

After leaving the party, the four American swimmers bought popcorn from a street vendor and hailed a cab.

He said no athlete had got into any trouble at the Olympic venues or in the athletes village.

‘I think they’re all shaken up. A lot of crimes in the city do not even get reported.

Security authorities have been contacted over the incident where Lochte and three team-mates were held up by criminals posing as police, the Games’ spokesman said.
