USA to work with United Nations on tighter sanctions against North Korea

It unanimously said Pyongyang’s launches on Monday of three Rodong missiles that traveled 1,000 kilometers before landing in Japan’s air defense identification zone were “a grave violation of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s global obligations” under a series of Security Council resolutions.

Mr. Obama also said the USA has an “unwavering” commitment to a missile-defense system for South Korea to deter the threat of North Korea and that bolstering the sanctions would involve closing loopholes in existing sanctions.

The UN has condemned the ballistic missile launches conducted by North Korea this week, warning of “further significant measures” against the reclusive country if it did not stop such actions.

He said the recent ballistic missile launches were “provocations” that flouted worldwide law and “would only lead to further isolation”.

The meeting convened after the United States, South Korea and Japan requested an emergency assembly in response to the missile tests.

The U.N. Security Council has strongly condemned North Korea’s latest ballistic missile tests as Pyongyang continues to develop its nuclear weapons.

The missiles likely landed in the sea 200 to 250 km (120 to 160 miles) west of Hokkaido, Japan’s northern-most main island. Obama said they were “provocative”.

North Korean supreme leader Kim Jong-un has called for further nuclear advancement as he oversaw a triple ballistic missile launch this week, state-run media stated Tuesday.

Hahn Choong-hee, ambassador and deputy permanent representative of South Korea to the United Nations, said the missile launches were posing a serious threat to the region.

“We have over many years seen North Korea try to find ways to evade sanctions, try to find ways to access foreign currency, try to find ways to access sensitive technologies using front-companies for their activities”.

But despite the global chorus of disapproval and tough sanctions, Pyongyang is unrepentant – continuing to ignore the worldwide community’s calls for a halt to its weapons programme.

“Taking into consideration the importance of China’s role in effective implementation of sanctions and the resolution process of the North Korean nuclear issue, our two countries have agreed to continue to communicate with China through various channels”, she said.

Although China is not pleased with North Korea’s actions, they also do not support THAAD, and it is unlikely that the new launches will change their opinion.
