USA Women’s Basketball To Take Home Gold At 2016 Rio Olympics
With the two top-ranked teams, number one United States and number two Spain, both packed with National Basketball Association talent, the game had the familiar buzz of a gold medal final.

The U.S. women, who haven’t lost a game in the Olympics since 1992, defeated Spain 101-72. The Americans rolled into Rio de Janeiro unbeaten in 10 years, such an overwhelming favorite that Djordjevic predicted early in the tournament that it would be a “long way to go” before somebody beat the Americans.
“I’m pretty sure we demonstrated that we’re one of the best teams ever”, Bird said.
Team USA placed five players in double figures Saturday. Lindsay Whalen came off the bench for 17 points, four rebounds, and six assists, while Moore had 14 points, five rebounds, and six assists.
“It’s been awesome what we’ve done”, said Diana Taurasi, the leading USA scorer at 15.6 points per game.
They will face the victor of Friday’s semifinal between Serbia and Australia on Sunday in the Gold medal game. “It’s not about one person, one coach, it’s about, ‘how can we make this the best basketball team ever?”
With the USA victory, Sue Bird, Tamika Catchings and Taurasi joined former teammates Teresa Edwards and Lisa Leslie as the only players to win four gold medals in basketball.
“It’s just special”, Moore said. “We have an All-Star team, and everyone played to that potential”.
For Spain, the silver was its first in Olympic women’s basketball.
“That’s unreal”, said United States forward Angel McCoughtry. The Americans are far ahead in the overall medal count in Rio, and the USA women have accounted for more than half the US medals.
“It’s historic for our country”.
Serbia’s top scorer was Jelena Milovanovic, with 18 points. Winning a gold medal at 21 years old is an incredible feat.
The United States will need to keep its cool in the gold medal game as well, as Draymond Green of the Warriors and DeAndre Jordan of the Los Angeles Clippers picked up technical fouls that helped Serbia get back into the game.
Brittney Griner becomes the 10 athlete to win Olympic gold, a FIBA World Championship title (2014), a WNBA crown (Phoenix Mercury, 2014) and an NCAA Championship (Baylor, 2012).
“It’s a Dream Team, best team in the world”, Spain guard Silvia Dominguez said. In the quarterfinals, they beat Japan by 46.
Torrens scored 10 points in the first eight minutes to give her team its largest lead at 17-14.
Bird returned from a sprained knee that kept her out of the semifinals to score three points.

Stewart got it started with two free throws and Taurasi followed with back-to-back 3-pointers. As the buzzer sounded for the end of the period, a last-gasp heave by Spain’s Silvia Dominguez from a few steps inside half-court found the bottom of the net. “I can’t believe it’s on my neck”. I can’t say enough about our players, how quickly they’ve come together, how much they’ve been able to accomplish in less than a month that we’ve been together. “I go from a college program where it’s, ‘You’re bad for basketball because you win too much.’ Now I go to a program that, people are going to say, ‘You’re bad for global basketball because you win too much.’ The parallels are unbelievable”.
