Daniel Cormier missed another chance to take on Jon Jones but the light heavyweight champion never looked bothered as he showed the way against Anderson Silva winning via unanimous decision in UFC 200 Sunday [Manila time]. Tate’s stay-back approach from the Holm fight differed markedly from her style against Nunes, although to be fair after the way she got hit the fight was going to be over sooner than later. Silva was announced as a replacement the very next day, pitting him against a champion that had been training for months on just two days notice.
Cormier, a former Olympian, is one of the best wrestlers in the sport.
In the end the fight proved the least popular on the night, with Cormier focusing on taking down Silva and keeping him on the ground, a modified strategy from what he had trained and planned for Jon Jones.
Throughout the fight, Cormier suffered through more than a few jeers from the Las Vegas crowd and as much as he wanted to make the bout with Silva an audience pleasing affair, he also needed to get a win more than anything else.
The UFC also debuted “We Are All Fighters” t-shirts this week.
The MMA world was rocked when, early on Thursday, news emerged from Las Vegas that the interim UFC light heavyweight champion had been flagged by the United States Anti-Doping Agency for a potential violation, with a banned substance or substances showing up from a test conducted on June 16. While it’s not fair to compare fighters in this light, this resemblance is somewhat uncanny.
