Usain Bolt once again silenced the doubters on Sunday night, winning the 100-meter world championship in Beijing to hold off rivals young and old.

Bolt, the Olympics’ double-gold victor (in the 100 and 200) and the world record-holder in the 100, overcame a season of injuries to win in a season’s best 9.79 seconds.

In a dead heat for third, Trayvon Bromell of the United States and Andre De Grasse of Canada shared bronze in 9.911 seconds.

The world’s fastest man lined up against two-time drugs cheat Justin Gatlin and three other convicted dopers in what was officially the 100-metre final of the 2015 World Championships but had been dubbed a battle for the soul of the sport.

With three solid performances in the long jump, the javelin and the concluding 800, the Olympic champion – then known as Jessica Ennis – won her second world title, six years after her first.

Watch the race below. All I had to do was put together a good race. The haunting silence afterwards set up the stage perfectly for the race.

The 29-year-old, back at the scene of his first triple Olympic triumph, called his Munich-based doctor, Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt, “a lifesaver”.

And that looked on course to end after the semi-finals when Gatlin blasted home in 9.77s, while Bolt nearly tripped out of the blocks and had to fight all the way to the line to snatch the win. I understand why everyone wanted me to win but I wanted top win for myself really.

“I felt some pressure as this competition takes place in China”, Wang said.

Gatlin shocked the fans in Beijing by registering the fastest time of the semi-finals by some distance, finishing in 9.77 seconds.

Gatlin, backed by many to dethrone the legendary Jamaican, had to settle for silver as he clocked 9.80secs – a slower time than he had managed in his semi-final earlier in the day.

Usain Bolt Has Now Won Nine Gold Medals at the World Championships. It was a big deal.

“I guess this recipe of confidence will also work for the 200m which is also my favourite event… I came out to run”. We got the right shoes for me to run in, took our time, got everything done and did some different stretches, it was great and I’m happy to have a doctor like him’.

At about the halfway point of Sunday’s final, he and Bolt were neck-and-neck. The last five metres were crucial here, I leaned too far forward coming to the finish line and caught myself off-balance.
