USC’s offensive line delivers blows early, late vs Stanford

Mitchell led all receivers with 83 yards at the half.

The ball hung in the air long enough for every fan in the stands to crane their necks to watch it, then dropped perfectly into Mitchell’s arms as he crashed into the ground.

Early in the fourth quarter, facing a 3rd-and-7 at his own 46, Darnold threw a pass to Deontay Burnett, through a very tight window, for 35 yards.

Now the adjustment falls on other Pac-12 coaches.

It was a completely different scene than what took place just a week earlier, when the Trojans trudged into the locker room to smattered boos.

Current head coach Clay Helton, an assistant to both Kiffin and Sarkisian, seemingly learned from their mistakes – and discovered the right balance in the use of four-wide receiver sets, no-huddle and the quarterback out of shotgun, while having a physical edge. “We’ve had a lot of hard roads and hard days with [Stanford] in the past”.

The now-legendary 2007 game was definitely a turning point, and I think it will be hard to adequately answer this question without talking about the decade since. “But that was our game plan, too”. USC amassed 623 yards in offense and, more importantly, limited Stanford to 170 yards rushing. Without Solomon Thomas and lacking quality depth on the line and playmakers at linebacker, the Cardinal is vulnerable up front. There is an opportunity to string together a few more wins before a key stretch of games in conference play. They finished the game with 12 straight runs.

It took only 12 seconds, however, to reverse the momentum. Burnett has nine catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns.

Darnold was soon at it again.

Darnold hit tight end Tyler Petite for 14 yards and Velus Jones Jr. for 16 on the drive.

The Cardinal running game was okay for parts of the game with Love running for 141 yards on 11 carries in the first half. True freshman running back Stephen Carr (11 carries, 119 yards) and junior Ronald Jones II (23 carries, 116 yards) showed they have the potential to be one of the best one-two punches in the country. OR led Nebraska 42-14 at halftime and had to come up with an interception to prevent a second-half rally by the Huskers from tying the game. That performance certainly wasn’t bad but it wasn’t up to the standard Darnold set in 2016.

Offensively, the Trojans are averaging 289.0 yards in passing and 232.0 yards in rushing while scoring 49.0 poins per game.

The negative Dallas Cowboys rumors don’t end there, as many National Football League analysts are picking the Seattle Seahawks to represent the NFC in the #Super Bowl. “It gives us a chance to be critical of ourselves and get better and come together as a team”.

It took Stanford just seconds to tie the score. The Trojans play fast on that side of the ball without strength – and vice versa.

“I’ve been playing Stanford for going on four years now”, safety Chris Hawkins said.

“They just came out better than us today”, said redshirt junior defensive tackle Harrison Phillips. “When you’ve got veterans like we’ve got, you’re able to do that”.

He ran an electronically timed 4.4 seconds in the 40-yard dash in high school and was also a national record holder in track and field for the 100 meters as a young teenager.
