Putting on a typical virtual reality (VR) headset like an Oculus Rift can be disorienting at first, as VR tends to shut you out of the real world and into a, well, virtual one. With the headset itself costing $399.99, the upgrade to get two Move controllers, a camera and a game represents very good value for money.

Loads of information on Sony’s PlayStation VR release, here. Not only do we have confirmation of an October launch at $399, but we’ve also learned that non-VR titles and movies can be enjoyed on a virtual big screen through cinematic mode.

Sony has announce the release of their new product, the PlayStation VR in the Game Developers Conference, yesterday. That is cheaper than rivals Oculus, which is selling the Rift at €700, and HTC’s Vive, which will cost €900. “We believe that virtual reality is the next step on that journey and will usher in an entirely new era of gaming”.

Sony touted PS4 as its fastest selling console ever, with more than 36 million of them bought since they hit the market in late 2013.

Sony caused a storm when they announced they were working on a Virtual Reality headset back at GDC in 2014. In comparison to what other headsets recommend for a VR experience, the PlayStation 4 is not even close to matching those requirements. In contrast, Sony’s device will be available to the more than 36m people who already own a PlayStation 4.
