The United States Women’s National Team will face Costa Rica on Friday at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kan. Substitute Christen Press added a goal in the 79th minute.
The U.S. started off strong as Crystal Dunn hit a shot off the crossbar in the 6th minute for the team’s first scoring opportunity.
As a left winger, she was a constant menace in the USWNT’s 4-0 win, dancing her way through Costa Rica’s back line and finding seams to play the ball through for her teammates.
The USWNT starts Olympics group on August 3 against New Zealand.
Crystal Dunn got the Americans on the board in the 15th minute with her 10th goal of the year, with Meghan Klingenburg getting the assist. Her long free kick in first-half stoppage time made it to Carli Lloyd in the box, who headed in the team’s third goal of the night. It was her ninth of the year and the 88th of her career.
US lineup: Solo (Naeher 46th); O’Hara, Johnston, Sauerbrunn (Engen 46th), Klingenberg (Krieger 46th); Horan (Brian 78th), Long, Lloyd; Dunn, Morgan (Press 63rd), Pugh (Heath 77th). With plenty of improvements before the Rio Olympics, USA coac Jill Ellis wants to experiment on the 18-player roster that was named on July 12.
Allie Long assisted Press’s goal from 12 yards.
