Utah holds off BYU in Las Vegas Bowl
New Mexico coach Bob Davie looked at the positives after the Lobos’ New Mexico Bowl loss to Arizona.

“Winning 10 games with the schedule we had is a big credit to our players”, Whittingham said. “I think people probably recognized that across the country watching that”.
Arizona 45, New Mexico 37: Anu Solomon threw two touchdowns passes and ran for a score to help Arizona (7-6) hold off New Mexico (7-6) in the New Mexico Bowl in Albuquerque.
It didn’t get better for the Cougars on the next two possessions.
New Mexico quarterback Lamar Jordan rushed for three touchdowns and threw a 92-yard touchdown pass to Delane Hart-Johnson before leaving the game in the third quarter with an injury. They started the year at 6-0 though, including a win over MI, a blowout win on the road over a ranked OR team, and a win at home over a ranked Cal squad. “One I’ll definitely remember”. The two programs shared a conference from 1922 to 2010 and played every year between 1946 and 2013. Freshman Tanner Mangum rallied them, completing a 42-yard touchdown pass to Mitch Mathews on the final play for a 33-28 victory at Lincoln. With all the run variables there is no rush pick in this game. Mangum has done a great job as a freshman signal caller and has pulled a few rabbits out of his hat already this year. They controlled the clock. It didn’t, though, because Hackett then came off the field and was replaced by Utah’s impotent offense. But during the last drive of the second half, BYU found a rhythm in the passing game as Mangum heated up.
“I just felt like we could convert that there, particularly with Austin at quarterback”, Davie said. “I am forever grateful to them and all the other great coaches I’ve worked with and players I’ve coached throughout my career”.
Despite the final margin, Utah controlled the game throughout. When they had it, you see their big-play potential. After the game, Wright said he will enter the National Football League draft. There’s little to no value in either BYU or Utah, regardless of the points.
The Utah Utes and Brigham Young Cougars take the field in the Las Vegas Bowl.
The No. 20 Utah Utes (10-3) beat the BYU Cougars (9-4) in the Royal Purple Las Vegas Bowl to achieve their first 10-win season since 2010.
“You are not going to lose a lot of games when you are plus-five in turnover margin”, said Utah coach Kyle Whittingham. “It’s the only thing that matters”.
“We are excited to announce Kalani Sitake as our new head football coach and welcome back one of our own”, Holmoe stated in a press release.
A former Cougars running back (1994, 1997-2000), Sitake returns to his alma mater with 15 years of coaching experience, including seven years a defensive coordinator and four seasons as an assistant head coach.
In what will go down as one of the strangest games of this bowl season, Utah jumped out to a 35-point first-quarter lead in the Las Vegas Bowl against rival BYU, then spent the final three quarters trying to hang on as its offense repeatedly stalled. He might have had win No. 100, but for five turnovers that put the Cougars in a 35-0 hole in the first quarter of Saturday’s game.

Sitake said he isn’t focused on the next rivalry game against Utah yet – that’s the second game next season. With two fumbles contributing to the cause, BYU couldn’t get a worse start to the game, which featured the second-largest crowd in Las Vegas Bowl history.
