The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported at least 1,133 cases of Zika infections within the U.S. Virtually all were cases where a person traveled outside the U.S. and became infected by mosquitoes aboard.
No vaccine or treatment for the Zika virus now exists and many of those infected will not show symptoms, the CDC says.
In one medical study from Brazil involving pregnant women with a rash condition and proven Zika virus infection, 33 percent of babies had some sort of adverse outcome, whether it was microcephaly, fetal loss or brain calcification, Holbrook said. Things like Zika’s symptoms, how long the virus stays in the blood, and the long term effect that Zika has on health – are things that scientists and doctors are still discovering.
CT has had three pregnant women test positive for Zika.

As of early July, there were 35 confirmed cases of Zika in Pennsylvania so far this year and 1,133 in the continental United States.
Pregnant women and their children are considered to be at greatest risk from the disease. Health officials in the state have confirmed there are six cases of it in Salt Lake County.

Even in areas of the continental United States where mosquitoes capable of carrying Zika virus are found, health officials have not identified any Zika infections transmitted by local mosquitoes. That makes it different from other mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue fever and chikungunya. Instead, they are all linked with people traveling to areas where the Zika virus has affected an important part of the population. Zika is primarily spread by mosquitoes, although several cases of sexual transmission have been reported as well.
