Valencia homers in 7-run 5th, A’s rally past Mariners 11-5

They struck for a seven-run inning for the second day in a row, the first time they’vedone that since 1975, and marched to an 11-5 victory over the Seattle Mariners that capped quite an eventful day in the Emerald City. Danny Valencia had a two-run shot and five Athletics total drove in at least two runs.

The Mariners swept a three-game set at home from May 8-10, sandwiching a pair of one-run victories around a 7-2 triumph. After Scribner’s rough outing, Edward Mujica (3-4), Pat Venditte and Drew Pomeranz combined for five scoreless innings to hold the Mariners in check after the A’s stormed ahead. Reddick hit his 15th homer of the season with two outs in the top of the ninth. The Athletics trailed 2-1 before staging a seven-run rally in the seventh inning which was highlighted by Mark Canha’s three-run triple.

“We were very resilient”, Valencia said. Chavez fell 4-3 to Seattle on May 10, allowing four runs over 6 2-3 innings, and gave up two-run homers to Cruz and Logan Morrison in 6 1-3 of a 9-5 defeat July 3.

A’s beginning pitcher Felix Doubront left after two innings.

Again … seven two-out runs.

Mariners: LHP James Paxton threw 36 pitches Sunday for Triple-A Tacoma in his first rehab start after almost three months on the disabled list with a strained middle finger.

Doubront took a Cano liner off the foot in the first inning but worked through the second before Oakland dug into its bullpen. He made 21 last season after starting four times in the first six years of his career. The 24-year-old has been positioned on the 15-day disabled record.

“At first, I thought it was broken”, Doubront said. The plan is to have him throw 65-70 pitches Friday. His 12 losses are second-most in the AL.

Chavez’s win over the Dodgers came in his career-high 22nd start. He is 0-4 with a 3.43 ERA in 14 appearances against Seattle.

Home runs by designated hitter Franklin Gutierrez and left fielder Mark Trumbo highlighted a five-run third inning as the Mariners jumped out to a 5-0 lead after Oakland reliever Evan Scribner replaced Doubront.
