Valencia job was one I had to take, says Neville

Quique Sanchez Flores has urged new Valencia head coach Gary Neville to ignore outside influences and concentrate on the aspects he can improve at the Mestalla.

“It is a great opportunity for Gaz and knowing him well he is brilliant at whatever he does”, Scholes told BBC Sport.

“I’ve been offered jobs in football over the last four to five years – but the timing never felt right”, he said.

The Mestalla supporters have been quick to link Valencia’s problems on the pitch with the triumvirate of power held by Lim, Mendes and Nuno – especially after former key Valencia figures Amadeo Salvo and Rufete were forced out of the club last summer. Gaz likes to be in control wherever he is.

“The only way to approach any football job is to think of it as a permanent job even if we know it is only six months”, he said.

Valencia play Barcelona at home on Saturday but Neville will not take charge of the team until after that match, explaining that he wanted the team’s preparations for facing the European champions to be “consistent” throughout the week.

“My responsibility is to appraise the players as quickly as possible and pick the best system that allows us to win straight away”.

“The doubts and concerns will only be wiped out by winning football matches”.

“I can’t find a teacher at the moment who gets up at 6am every day, so if you know someone then let me know, ‘ he said”.

“We are going to be facing a massive team with brilliant players”, he added.

“He has that positive attitude and he is a victor, an absolute victor, and I think he will do well”.

Neville, 40, has carved out a successful second career as an outspoken and acclaimed analyst for Sky Sports alongside assisting England boss Roy Hodgson since ending his playing days in 2011.

Neville, who won eight Premier League titles, two Champions League trophies and three FA Cups as United, admitted that as a neutral, he would be sceptical over his appointment, yet is confident in his abilities. So that’s not a consideration – I’ll work with the players we have.

“I talked to him afterwards and he gave me words of encouragement”.

“I’m very aware of the traditions at Valencia and how they play”.
