Van carrying girls’ water polo team crashes; 1 teenager dead
A van carrying players and family members of the Worthington Kilbourne High School girls water polo team was involved in a “serious” crash that resulted in one death and five critical injuries while traveling Friday, Aug. 12, to a tournament in northwest Ohio.

Roughly two hours after the team posted on its Twitter account, “Off to the first tournament in Napoleon”, their van collided with a grain truck near Toledo, reports said. They, along with the other injured passengers, were flown by helicopter to hospitals in Toledo and were believed to have suffered “life-threatening injuries”, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office said.
Nineteen-year-old Courtney Fisher, who wasn’t a member of the water polo team, died at the scene of the accident, which occurred on Friday morning about 20 miles east of Napoleon in Richfield Township.
The Henry County Sheriff’s Office said a passenger van driven by Vicki Fisher was westbound on OH 281 and had stopped at a stop sign. The injured are 45-year-old van driver Vicki Fisher, 17-year-old Betsey Fisher, 14-year-old Melanie Fisher, 15-year-old Samantha Fink and 14-year-old Sydney Zullich.
Dramatic photos taken by eyewitnesses show the mangled remains of the van on top of a haulage vehicle and a crane attempting to move a large HGV truck lay in a ditch on its side. He said the van carrying players and family members from Worthington Kilbourne High School.
‘I feel for these people, ‘ he told WCMH.
Unfortunately, we have sad news to share.
The district also said counselors will be available to students.
