The Belgium worldwide, however, revealed that the fault lies with the United squad for not following Van Gaal’s game plan.

“Shocking, clueless, heartless, and brainless – one of the worst I’ve ever seen”, he said on Sky Sports.

“We are still in three competitions, so we can fight for a lot”. Wayne Rooney, the official captain of Manchester United, is out of action for two months at the moment.

The Hammers visit Old Trafford full of confidence having won four on the spin, including impressive victories over a high-flying Tottenham side and coming from two-goals down to beat Everton at Goodison Park. We could have scored more goals in the first half, but that’s life. I think we could have done with getting an away goal – we know we’ve got a hard job on our hands.

Louis Van Gaal switched his formation in the second half from 4-2-3-1 to 3-5-2 but it had little effect as Liverpool capitalised on a weak clearance from makeshift defender Michael Carrick for Roberto Firmino to bag the home side’s second.

With Louis Van Gaal nearly certain to leave in the summer, speculation as has been rife about the next Old Trafford boss.

“Manchester United should be competing to win the Premier League and Champions League every season”, said Scholes.

“I see a lot of your colleagues [in the media] are not believing in that but that was already [the case] for a long time and we are still in three competitions”.

Manchester United travel to Anfield on Thursday evening for their first leg tie in the UEFA Europa League round of 16.

Overturning that deficit will be a big ask in Thursday’s return fixture, but United will go into it buoyed by Anthony Martial’s late leveller in Sunday’s quarter-final with West Ham.

Van Gaal put United’s inconsistencies down to a rotation policy borne out of necessity and remains upbeat about his chances, despite the rising pressure and Jose Mourinho constantly being linked.

He said: “In our dressing room after the game it was kind of silent”. Manchester United vs. Crystal Palace and West Ham vs. Watford are now postponed for the FA Cup meeting between United and West Ham.
