Van Gaal at training ground

It is being reported that Van Gaal will receive a £5 million payout while United are also believed to have paid Mourinho £4m earlier this season to stop him agreeing to join another club.

United have always been reported to be considering appointing Mourinho due to inconsistent results and uninspiring performances under Van Gaal, and a failure to qualify for the Champions League saw speculation intensify.

Whatever the reason was for him getting the sack was however, it appears this has not put Manchester United off of making him their next manager.

If Van Gaal had combined that record 12th FA Cup success by snatching a Champions League place then perhaps he might have survived but, with Jose Mourinho waiting in the wings, there will be few fans lamenting the departure.

“I hope that winning the FA Cup will give the club a platform to build upon next season to restore the success that this passionate set of fans desire”, he added.

United executive vice chairman Ed Woodward praised Van Gaal for behaving with “great professionalism and dignity” in the two years since he replaced David Moyes, Ferguson’s immediate successor.

“I am very disappointed to be unable to complete our intended three-year plan”, he said.

Van Gaal signed a three-year contract to take over as manager of the Old Trafford club in 2014.

I am immensely proud to have helped United win the FA Cup for the 12th time in the club’s history.

The former Bayern Munich boss watched his side miss out on qualification for the Champions League as they were forced to settle for a fifth-placed finish in the Premier League table.

Jose Mourinho “could save” Manchester United when appointed as manager, says former goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel. He has done things that are not in the way Manchester United wants the football club to run.

“They blooded seven or eight young players a year ago and every one of them showed that they can play at the level required of Manchester United”. Even in the transition moments or not the best moments for the club, United can always win a trophy.

The Red Devils also failed to advance past the group stage of Europe’s elite club competition following a 3-2 defeat at Wolfsburg in December 2015 and were later eliminated from the Europa League courtesy of a two-legged last-16 loss to rivals Liverpool.
