Van Gaal: Goal-shy United in ‘a bad period’

Van Gaal’s men have scored 15 goals in eleven Premier League games, the fewest of any side in the top four and fewer even than 15th placed Chelsea.

“Of course, but today when you are not creating so many chances you can not complain”, he told reporters.

“I think we’ll have to wait (but) it’ll happen”. And that is our history until now.

But Van Gaal has remained unwavering in his support of England’s all-time leading scorer.

He said: “Yes, I would consider it but not only for Wayne”.

‘I think Phil Jones can play [against CSKA Moscow] but for Memphis, it is too early’.

Palace were playing like a team possessed and were like a rash in United’s faces. I have still confidence in Wayne Rooney’.

But Van Gaal insists he retains full confidence in Rooney re-discovering his goal touch and admits he is in a privileged position because of his status as Manchester United captain.

“He always played as at left winger at Monaco”, van Gaal said.

“We have to improve that and I hope we shall score against CSKA Moscow, but I know it is very hard because they are very organised”.

“That’s not so simple, so I have to decide every week dependable on the game plan and qualities of opponent, and so on”. “It was a big target for us to stop him and we felt that if we could stop him we could stop their creative angle”.

United’s supporters chanted for the team to attack, after a week in which van Gaal’s tactics were criticised as being unadventurous by former United player Paul Scholes.

Only 20 per cent feel the Dutchman is “getting it right” at Old Trafford.

Palace manager Pardew was pleased with his side’s display but felt his team deserved to win.

But Van Gaal is convinced Rooney still deserves his place in the team. “That incision is what they lacked today”.

Palace had the best chance to win the game when midfielder Yohan Cabaye turned a shot wide from six metres out after a cross from Joel Ward in the 74th minute.

While it didn’t appear to change his methods on Saturday afternoon, perhaps Van Gaal showed the first signs that he is growing frustrated with the way his players are understanding his philosophy and that in turn left him disappointed with the display.

“I was a little bit frustrated. They have always done that and I hope they shall be the 12th player again against CSKA Moscow”.
