Van Gaal has players’ backing – Rooney
A 3-2 defeat at Wolfsburg ended United’s Champions League hopes and they sit nine points adrift of leaders Leicester in fifth place having failed to win any of their last four league games.

Louis Van Gaal’s reign as Manchester United manager is more precarious than ever after showing signs of cracking under mounting pressure by storming out of an extraordinary press conference which lasted less than five minutes.
United captain Wayne Rooney insists the players are fighting to ease the pressure on the manager and reverse the club’s fortunes.
“You have a lot of people talking about things that they believe are happening. It’s important we all stick together”.
But Van Gaal says he has been called by Woodward, his predecessor David Gill – who is still on the United board – and former manager Ferguson in recent days.
The former Netherlands boss said he had only turned up to speak to journalists because of Premier League rules.
The Red Devils are on a six-game winless run and dropped out of the top four in the Premier League after a loss to Norwich last weekend.
“It is not nice, obviously, getting criticised every week, every game. I thought they’d give him more time, so the same would apply to Van Gaal”. “I read I have been sacked”.
“It’s a must-win game for Louis van Gaal, but I don’t see them doing it. Stoke are a decent team, and they don’t let in a lot of goals at the Britannia Stadium”, Merson told Sky Sports.
“What do you think that happens with my wife or with my kids? We are not in a good position but four weeks ago we were first in the Premier League and in about four weeks we can again be back in that position”. You want to go there, be successful and make an impact. “That’s what I’m wondering”, he snapped after being asked about [Arsenal manager] Arsene Wenger’s claim that Van Gaal’s treatment had been “disrespectful”.
“We’re the players who are out there on the pitch and we haven’t been performing as well as we have done in the past”, the England global added. “But we have to win first against Stoke City, that is the main focus”.

Fierce speculation suggested United were ready to axe Van Gaal before the festive period, although he now appears set to oversee the fixtures against Stoke and Chelsea.
