Van Gaal: I’m a different manager to Wenger and Ferguson

He goes through little things with me on the pitch and individual stuff.

Louis van Gaal says he is a different type of manager to Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger as he prepares to take on the Arsenal boss at the Emirates on Sunday.

The manager is sure to be keen to nurture them as much as possible, and Chambers says the best piece of advice his boss has given him was to relax and enjoy his football. I have set my aims always in advance.

However, United face Arsenal in what is their biggest match so far this season, and Van Gaal will be wary of a backlash. “Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson are other types I think”.

Van Gaal insisted there are no regrets about managing a host of different clubs, including Bayern Munich and Barcelona, rather than create a legacy like Ferguson and Wenger.

Van Gaal said: “I was in Ajax eight years in a row [at the start of the 1990s; the first two years as assistant manager]”.

“I take that challenge so it’s also dependent on your character, what do you want“. “To be fair Theo [Walcott] and [Alexis] Sanchez have started scoring in the last few games so I think it’s more of having a holding defensive midfielder who has a bit of a presence and is a leader. I have been very lucky that clubs or national teams want me”.

The 30-year-old even featured at right-back in United’s 2-1 win over Wolfsburg on Wednesday night and his manager singled him out for praise today. “Not many players are actually team players”. I always said in advance that I wanted to coach the Dutch national team, I was invited, then to coach overseas, I was invited, to go back to the Netherlands or Germany, and I was invited.

“Obviously he got the chances because of that but it is always like that”.
