Van Gaal: I still have Woodward’s backing
Van Gaal has been criticised by some supporters for his side’s style of play, and the defeat to Norwich meant United had gone six games in all competitions without victory for the first time since 1998.

Support for Van Gaal from his players has been increasingly muted in recent weeks, but defender Phil Jones has offered fulsome backing to his boss after he oversaw a third straight defeat against the Canaries on Saturday.
But Round, who worked with Giggs under Van Gaal’s predecessor David Moyes, said the Old Trafford legend is the right choice to fill the job he once held on an interim basis after Moyes’ departure. And Londoners should not imagine Mourinho is as revered around Old Trafford as he rightly remains in SW6. The 64-year-old was also at the AON Training Complex on Sunday.
“It’s not even questionable in the dressing room [that the manager has the players’ backing]”.
“Louis Van Gaal should consider what he has done”.
The Sun reports that United chief executive Ed Woodward has held talks with Mourinho and is satisfied that he is in place for if the trigger is pulled on their under-pressure manager.
The only obstacle for Mourhino – an odds-on favourite to be the next United boss – is the availability of Bayern Munich’s Pep Guardiola at the end of the season.
United playmaker Juan Mata, meanwhile, insists he and his team-mates can arrest their slump over the next week when they face Stoke and Chelsea. “We’re upset, the fans are upset, everyone is upset, but we need the fans more than ever now”.
If rumours are to be believed, Jose Mourinho once locked himself in his house and cried after missing out on the Manchester United job but The Special One might be ensuring that his phone is fully charged over the next few days.
They write: “Several media and journalists close to Portuguese Jose Mourinho say the technician has agreed a deal with Manchester United for the next five years, the news is not yet official”.
“It is not easy when you are a newly-promoted team and you are fighting against clubs that are far bigger than us”.
“We all feel frustrated, same as last week, and we need to win a game as quickly as possible because it will change our mood and give us confidence, I’m sure of that”.
United travel to Stoke on Boxing Day and host struggling champions Chelsea next Monday. “We have got to pull through and we will”.

“I think every player has a contribution in how we play and in many matches you have a good quality but also in matches you don’t have a good quality or one player is out of shape or something like that but that’s football”.
