Van Gaal leads United training as club deny resignation offer

Louis van Gaal offered to resign following Manchester United’s loss to Southampton on Saturday, according to a report by Jamie Jackson in The Guardian.

Reports this morning said the Dutchman spoke to United chief executive Ed Woodward about his future after the defeat.

But Sky Sports News HQ reporter James Cooper says no such offer was made and there is no suggestion that Van Gaal will end his tenure in the next 24 hours.

Writing in his Daily Telegraph column, Redknapp explained why he believes United will stick with the 64-year-old former Barcelona manager.

It is understood the United boss is in Holland for his daughter’s birthday and is not expected back at Carrington until tomorrow.

Jose Mourinho is so desperate to become the next Manchester United manager, that he has written a six-page letter to the club, vowing to adhere by their principles.

Van Gaal appeared to be on the brink of losing his job after United lost their fourth straight game – against Stoke on Boxing Day – but hung on after beating Swansea, Sheffield United and Liverpool.

Van Gaal has expressed his own frustration, saying: “I’m very disappointed that I can not reach the expectations of the fans”.

Gill told the BBC that the boos aimed at Van Gaal and his team as they left the field on Saturday were the worst he has seen.

The Red Devils now lie at fifth in the Premier League standings, 10 points behind leaders Leicester City. “We are not very lucky with our injuries, that s a problem”, said Van Gaal, who saw Matteo Darmian go off in the second half against Southampton holding his chest after an aerial collision with Shane Long.

Further talks are planned in the coming days, with United unsure whether Van Gaal will have changed his stance in deciding the time has come for him to walk away.
