Van Gaal may resign after Stoke defeat
Sky Sports report that training at the club’s Carrington training complex ahead of Monday’s game with Chelsea was taken by assistant coach Ryan Giggs, and that Louis van Gaal was conspicuous by his absence.

The 20-times English champions have always been associated with swashbuckling attacking football but, apart from a brief flurry after the break when Van Gaal brought captain Wayne Rooney off the bench having omitted him for “tactical reasons”, they were woefully short.
When asked if he still had the support from the club’s hierarchy, Van Gaal told the media: “I can also quit by myself”. “You can say I have failed if you like, but I don’t think it’s like that”, he said.
“The decision on my future is another situation, we have lost the fourth game so you have to wait and see”.
“If one keeps losing continuously, it sometimes leaves the board with no choice”, said the Australian glovesman, who was the only player signed twice by Sir Alex Ferguson during his time at Old Trafford.
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Mark Bosnich told TalkSport that he thinks Van Gaal is a defeated man and Jose Mourinho should be appointed to turn the club around.
“And I have to deal with that, but much more important is that the players have to deal with that because they have to perform”.
“I am not so interested in public sayings”.
“It is very hard as I’m also part of four losses and I have to cope with that and I have to manage that”.
“We didn’t play our football because of the pressure and we would not cope with the circumstances either as a group or individual players”.
The England striker, 30, came on for the second half but United still struggled to create chances as they went four top-flight games without victory. “I said we have to play football at half-time and you have seen the difference, but that is not enough, you have to start in the first minute”.
In fact, should United fail to win on Monday, they will end the year with their lowest points total in 26 years.
Spanish news outlet Fichajes earlier this month reported that Mourinho has been given the green signal to replace van Gaal.

“I thought we produced a similar first-half performance here that we showed against Manchester City, so we’re delighted that we were able to do it again”.
