Van Gaal raises prospect of quitting after fourth loss in a row
Louis van Gaal is still the Manchester United manager – for the time being at least.

Van Gaal cut his press conference short on Wednesday, taking just three questions and asking for an apology as he accused the media of publishing false reports on his future.
Manchester United’s Michael Carrick (centre) says his team-mates are fully behind under-pressure club manager Louis Van Gaal.
“But I am the one who wants to speak first with the board of Manchester United and with the members of staff and with my players”.
Van Gaal hinted after United’s 2-0 Boxing Day defeat by Stoke City that he would leave the club if results did not improve.
“It is a bit disrespectful when people say the lads aren’t trying for the manager”, Carrick was quoted as saying by the BBC ahead of Monday’s match against Chelsea.
Providing his analysis on why United were some abysmal at the Brittania stadium, he said his side lost the plot in the first half of the game.
United meet Chelsea on Monday in a huge game that could yet determine van Gaal’s fate.
“I said at half-time we had nothing to lose and we coped better after that”.
But winger Willian said: “This situation is hard for us but I think we can go and win game by game and finish the league in the top four. I have to deal with that, but much more important is that the players have to deal with that because they have to perform”.
If the Dutchman does depart then Mourinho, who left struggling Chelsea on December 17, would be among the favourites to take over. United have picked only two points in their last five matches as confidence has taken a major hit in the camp. “It’s not long until the next game (against Chelsea) so I think we have to move on from this game and forget about the loss”, Pereira told manutd.com.
Murphy said: “With Jose Mourinho you’re guaranteed trophies and Pep Guardiola is the same”.
“We need a victory and that’s very important, but we also have to do our professional work, our preparation and of course the recovery and training sessions”.
“We didn’t dare to play the football that we can and I have analysed it as a outcome of the circumstances: the pressure that you have to cope with as a player group, as an individual player”, he said.
