Mata said: “It was a very tough game because we were physically exhausted at the end”.

Relieved by United’s first win in Group B – after the defeat at PSV Eindhoven on matchday one – Smalling was still quick to identify areas for improvement, as the Reds withstood a late Wolfsburg rally.

Carrick’s fellow central midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, 31, came off in the second half of the Wolfsburg game while Morgan Schneiderlin played the full 90 minutes. “They have shown that a lot of times”, Van Gaal said, before adding that “in a technical and tactical sense” Arsenal are arguably the best team in the league.

“I’m very happy that I can have my chance now and I’m very pleased that the manager has given me this opportunity”, Pereira told his club’s official website. “And the way he scored a goal was outstanding, especially for a defender, and especially for him because he is not doing that so much”.

“Of course, because you shall win the Champions League when you are clinical and when you can finish the game much earlier”.

Juan Mata agreed with Louis van Gaal’s assessment that tiredness took its toll on United in the second half of the win over Wolfsburg.

“We have everything in our own hands and that is very important”, van Gaal said.

Anthony Martial of Manchester United looks on prior to the Champions League match on Wednesday night against Wolfsburg.

“We score but after that it was suffering. You never know so I can not answer that question”, Van Gaal said. But he delivered an unflattering response when it was put to him that, on that form, the Spaniard was among the most creative players in Europe.

“Not many players are actually team players but he is always thinking of the team, and he can play in a lot of positions”.
