Van Gaal stays defiant as United seal fifth place
Louis van Gaal is confident that he will still be at Old Trafford next season despite Manchester United crawling to an underwhelming fifth-place finish in the English Premier League.

Bournemouth only managed to open their account when United’s defender Chris Smalling smashed a goal in his own net at the last minute, the Guardian reported.
United refunded all fans with tickets for Sunday’s match and offered them free entry to the rearranged game, but a number stayed away as Rashford followed Monday’s England call-up with a lovely goal in a win that belatedly brought the Premier League to a close.
Van Gaal conceded that the their standing represented a “step back”, but said that Leicester City’s title triumph proved anyone could win next season.
But when challenged on this by a reporter, Van Gaal said: “I have said that also with very much conscience. Too high. We are a team in transition”, Van Gaal said.
Rooney further added that a club with a glorious history as Manchester United deserves to be in the Champions League, as it is the biggest competition in Europe.
But it was a tame end to the season, at a two-thirds full stadium, which laid bare Uniteds stagnation under Van Gaal. Even a possible FA Cup triumph against Crystal Palace at Wembley on Saturday (8.30pm UAE time) will not turn the fans around.
Introduced to the crowd for a post-match address, the Dutchman was booed by pockets of the home support, before declaring, somewhat ironically: I want to thank you for your unconditional support.. If we hadn’t won the FA Cup he might not have kept his job.
“He’s one of the best managers in the game but it’s about players”.
“I saw [the first goal] developing from deeper and it was a great dummy from Marcus for me to finish it”, the captain said.
I’m sorry to say Louis, but it’s time to say goodbye.
This season, United scored only 49 goals, the least of the top 12 teams in the league.

These numbers are extremely screaming out that something in Van Gaal’s system has to change. “I want to win something here”, Fellaini said, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News. Most of the team have picked themselves with recent performances, but the return of Marouane Fellaini from a three-game ban has put the manager in a conundrum with regards to his place in the team.
