Van Gaal unsure of future if United miss Champions League

United lie fifth in the Barclays Premier League table, six points adrift of the top four, but their performances have led to speculation former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has been lined up for the Old Trafford hotseat.

All three players started in United’s 7-0 thrashing of Norwich City Under-21s on Monday 8 February, with Varela and Januzaj both leaving the pitch before half-time. I don’t want to say anything about injuries but we have a group of 26 players and we have 11 injured players or very exhausted players. You don’t have to answer to invented stories.

“There’s a bit of a merry-go-round of managers at the minute and I think he’ll probably sit tight for a while and then will end up at a big club somewhere, because he’s a great manager”. As a result, Louis van Gaal is likely to choose an unchanged side from the one which couldn’t keep the ball or defend for half an hour against Chelsea. Paul Scholes has been extremely vocal in his criticism of Louis van Gaal, as he previously claimed that he wouldn’t have enjoyed playing under him at Manchester United.

United will get the chance to pile the pressure on City this weekend as they kick off in the early game on Saturday against relegation battlers Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Arsenal remain in the hunt for honours in the top flight, Champions League and FA Cup, which they are aiming to win for a third season running. “They’re not nasty injuries but they need time to recover”, Van Gaal said.

Scholes’ friend Giggs sits next to van Gaal on the bench at United where he has notably kept his own counsel about the manager’s methods but the Dutchman said he would never think of asking his No. 2 to intercede on his behalf.

There were no questions from investors on Van Gaal, or any possible replacement.

“But that is not enough – we have to improve our results in consistency and win a lot of matches in a row”.

“I do think there will be more activity coming in the summer, but it is very hard to predict what kind of impact that will have”, United’s executive vice-chairman said in a conference call with investors on Thursday.

“I can not say Bastian Schweinsteiger is returning in two weeks”. That’s the thing I like most about him.
