“Monday’s headlines should all be about Usain Bolt winning the 100m, but how can it not be Wayde van Niekerk beating the great Michael Johnson’s 400m world record?”. He was wrong about that, very wrong.
The way James sees it, Wayde van Niekerk is the current world champion and LaShawn Merritt won the 2013 world title. To think, Johnson’s mark was considered one of the nearly untouchable records in track.
This time security intercepted the intruder before he reached Sumgong, who crossed the finish line safely in 2 hours, 22 minutes, 4 seconds. The gold-medal time was almost half a second faster than van Niekerk’s previous best, which he set when he won the 2015 world championships last summer in Beijing.
Sarah Robles (San Jacinto High) won the United States’ first weightlifting medal in 16 years with bronze in the women’s over-75-kilogram category.
“Oh my God. That felt better than anything I’ve ever won”. “There’s no way I’m going to limit myself”.
The 2016 Rio Olympics track and field competition got off to a terrific start in the first two days, but Sunday provided the most excitement yet with the finals of the men’s 100 and 400 meters. “Also, I need to try to do my very best not to do something wrong that might break him”, she told the City Press. A few meters from the finish line, there was nobody near him. I’m just trying to stay focused, keep healthy and recover.
Nieker finished more than seven-tenths of a second quicker than defending Olympic champion Kirani James of Grenada.
“I am just really grateful for being part of this generation of athletics and just keeping the sport alive”. I was so excited that we got the win over Arsenal.
“I can’t even tell you what happened in the race”, Van Niekerk said at a packed press conference, sat alongside silver medallist James and third-placed Merritt. – Murray’s fellow Brit Justin Rose made history, winning the first men’s Olympic golf gold medal since 1904 with a two-stroke victory over Henrik Stenson.
Wayde van Niekerk (RSA) of South Africa and LaShawn Merritt (USA) of USA react.
Van Niekerk watched the last Olympics at home on television but had a straightforward message for anyone who suggested his remarkable progress in the last four years was down to doping. Seriously, a great grandmother. He’s been such a huge rock in inspiring me as an athlete.
“I know I’m not, so what else can I say?”
“I don’t think any athlete really wants to be in lane eight, but when you have it, you embrace it”, he said. “It is just insane, just so good”, – golf gold medallist Rose revels in his win.
During Van Niekerk’s race on Sunday, Botha was adorably excited for her runner, jumping up and down in the stands and generally looking shocked at what she had witnessed. “These are fantastic guys. I learned from them”, he said.
Van Niekerk added that he would love the opportunity to race against Bolt one day.

“It was about going out and executing the run as best as possible”. “I’ve got a lot to brag about tonight”.
