Vander Plaats endorses Republican Sen. Ted Cruz for president
On Thursday, he was officially endorsed by Bob Vander Plaats, who leads the Iowa-based conservative group, The Family Leader.

Sometimes Bob Vander Plaats, the longtime head of the Family Leader organization, a key Iowa Christian-right institution, is called a “kingmaker” in Republican presidential politics.
Schwarm said that the endorsement of Vander Plaats coupled with the support of King and Deace shows that “social conservatives are now going to support Ted Cruz and show up on caucus night”.
Even with Vander Plaats and Perkins in his corner, Cruz’s efforts to consolidate the evangelical vote is far from complete in a field here a half-dozen Republicans can claim the mantle of the religious right. Four years later, he endorsed Rick Santorum two weeks before the caucuses and the former senator from Pennsylvania edged out Mitt Romney to win the contest on a late surge. But Monday’s CNN/ORC poll found in Iowa that more evangelicals backed Cruz than any other candidate, and Perkins could help get more.
The Family Leader did not have consensus to make an endorsement, but the board unanimously released Vander Plaats and his colleagues Robert Cramer, Bill Tvedt and Chuck Hurley, to endorse the senator independently. And in recent months, the Republican hopefuls have come in droves, meeting privately with the pair at Family Leader headquarters or in King’s congressional district – often multiple times.
Vander Plaats also referenced how the Supreme Court redefined marriage, saying, “You’ll need a leader there that knows how to deal with the courts”, referencing how in the past, Cruz clerked for the Supreme Court and has argued cases and won in front of the court.
Trump also accused Cruz of being beholden to big oil companies because he opposes ethanol subsidies, which are deeply popular in Iowa.
“The policy positions he (Jeb Bush) is staking out, whether it is embracing amnesty, or whether it is embracing Common Core, are not conservative positions, I think they are in direct conflict with the views of most Republicans”.
With the Iowa Caucuses just 53 days away, endorsements for presidential candidates are starting to pour in.
For Cruz, it was a soft jab but a definite break for Cruz, who has repeatedly declined to criticize Trump publicly and has accused the media of trying to set up a “cage match” between the two. “Ted Cruz”, Vander Plaats said at a press conference Thursday.
The new poll puts Trump 13 points higher since the last CBS poll was conducted in October.
But now that the Texas Republican’s comments at a private fundraiser have leaked, Trump is signaling he’s ready to throw down.
Vander Plaats smeared transgender people and falsely suggested they would assault people in restrooms.
“What’s appealing about Ted Cruz is he still gives that “outside” appearance”, Vander Plaats told the Register.

“Ben Carson was doing remarkably well, but the fact that Ted Cruz is getting this says we like Carson, but Cruz is our guy. Every one of us who is running is being assessed by the voters under that metric, and that is exactly why we have a democratic election to make that determination”.
