Vanderbilt ranked in Associated Press preseason hoops poll

Our huge annual preseason basketball section came out in Sunday’s print edition, and we have begun posting stories from it online.

The Cal men’s basketball team is ranked 14th in the Associated Press men’s basketball preseason poll released Monday, matching the Golden Bears’ position in the USA Today preseason ratings. FSU and UConn face off in the Naismith Hall of Fame Women’s Holiday Showcase on Friday, December 11, at 6 p.m. on ESPN2 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

The buzz about the Vanderbilt basketball program only has increased in the two-plus weeks since the preseason coaches poll was released.

The SEC only had 3 total teams in the top 25 and my guess there will be more throughout the season find their way into the poll.

The Associated Press recognized FSU head coach Sue Semrau as the National Coach of the Year last season and also named senior center Adut Bulgak and junior guard Leticia Romero as All-Americans.

The Commodores open the season November 13 against Austin Peay.

North Carolina, which reached the Sweet 16 last year, returns four starters and nine of its 10 top scorers from a year ago. Additionally, Rutgers and Iowa were among others receiving votes. Kentucky (10 first-place votes) is second, Maryland (14) third and Kansas (5) fourth.

The first AP poll of the season is out, and UConn is tabbed to be one of the nation’s top teams.
