Leicester and Vardy, who scored before being sent off and is the Premier League’s joint top scorer, have until Thursday afternoon to respond to the charges.

Leicester’s Premier League title hopes were dealt a slight blow when Vardy was shown a second yellow card for simulation after going to ground in the penalty area during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with West Ham.

“I’m very happy with what I’ve done”, the Italian said. I don’t think he did go down.

Yesterday, however, England manager Hodgson admitted he was going “out on a limb” when he risked the wrath of his paymasters by suggesting that Vardy was not only the victim of refereeing blunder but went further to by excusing Vardy’s feisty response as precisely the sort of attitude his players might show this summer.

On Sunday Watford head to Wembley for their FA Cup semi-final against Crystal Palace, and Bilic said: “On one hand they will probably think a bit about the game at the weekend, and maybe they will rest some players”.

Try and defend it as much as you like with excuses of emotion, the occasion and the clearly inadequate display by Moss, but there is and simply will never be anyway a player should get away abusing an official like that.

The challenge of playing without so crucial a player is a significant one, and the question as to how they should replace him is tricky, with a few possible options standing out. “I’m ambitious. I want this title, but inside me there’s this thought that says, ‘Claudio, what you’ve accomplished is no mean feat'”. I would like us to get a penalty.

To the question of what would constitute success and persuade the FA to offer him a new contract, he added: “You are asking me to go along with something I don’t believe in”. But you can not get me to put my name to it because if I were running a football club I would not be choosing a coach purely on the basis of “I’ll take this fella because he has won the last five games”, knowing full well he wasn’t very good.

“We know, we trust those players and we know that we can be a strong team together”. This will be a crucial time for Leicester City, because now they can break free of the conception that they are successful only because of Vardy.

“We will always fight to the death, and thats what we did, ” said Leicesters Danny Simpson to Sky Sports after the match. “Our performance was fantastic, this is our soul, we play every match with this blood, heart and soul, it was magnificent”.
