Vardy gets off the mark to fire up Leicester

Well, almost, writes Rob Tanner in his verdict of the game.

The game was played at the King Power Stadium, and Arsenal dominated the home team.

It was there again on Saturday as Jamie Vardy scored his 30th Premier League goal, a first of this fledgling campaign, to down Swansea and kick-start the champions’ title-defence.

Danny Drinkwater was doing his utmost to get Vardy in behind the Swans’ backline, but for Federico Fernandez to catch up to the first attempt well.

Even the celebration looked familiar as Vardy ran towards the visiting fans to rub salt into their wounds after they had been jeering him in the early stages of the game.

That goal seemed to spark Swansea into life, especially Modou Barrow, but it was too little too late and the half-time whistle went before they could build up a head of steam.

In fact, a 2-1 defeat flattered Swansea.

Leicester led 2-0 at the time of Schmeichel’s departure following Jamie Vardy’s first-half opener and Wes Morgan’s strike early in the second half, and Riyad Mahrez had just spurned the chance to extend the lead after his penalty was saved by Lukasz Fabianski.

“He has a little hernia and Monday he will have an operation”, he said.

The sense of total disarray from Swansea increased in the 56th minute when Amat recklessly brought Okazaki down in the area, but this time they escaped after Fabianski pushed away Mahrez’s tame penalty.

Claudio Ranieri said that the three points were very important for Leicester City.

Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel needs surgery, but Claudio Ranieri expects the shot-stopper to be ready for his side’s next game.

The Russian league is very different from English football, they play a slower tempo. He can play centre-back, central midfielder, right-back, right winger and I am very pleased with him.

The champions also have other injury worries, with recruit Nampalys Mendy sidelined with an ankle injury. The youngster was a commanding figure, breaking up Swansea attacks with his strength and athleticism and setting City on the attack with simple, mature passes. Now I speak with both the lads.

Ranieri has been anxious to lessen the burden on Vardy’s shoulders this summer.

“They can play together and when they do they will frighten people”.
