Add CMT to the reboot craze.

CMT is getting into the reboot game with a whole new take on the high school football classic Varsity Blues. The network is ordered a script for the project, which will be penned by W. Peter Iliff, writer of the original movie that starred James Van Der Beek.
For those that don’t remember it, it followed the story of a Texas quarterback (Van Der Beek) who rebels against a football obsessed town and the abusive coach of his team (Jon Voight).
The movie was a surprise hit, fetching $54.3 million with a $16 million budget and dominated the box office for two straight weekends.
This is the latest revival from CMT, who recently saved series “Nashville” after ABC pulled the plug on the show earlier this year. Key to the remakes is having the original producers – in this case, Paramount – involved in some capacity as more studios look to monetize their existing film libraries. Amazon on Tuesday also picked up its Paramount TV-produced Jack Ryan series and the studio also counts Fox’s Minority Report and Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.

The film-to-TV adaptation trend continues on, as Varsity Blues is being turned into a television series.
