Wednesday, Pope Francis visited Ciudad Juarez.
Francis said Thursday that a person who advocates building walls for solutions is “not Christian”. “My advice to the Pontiff – reach out and build a bridge to Donald Trump”.
“No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man’s religion or faith”, Pope Francis said in statement.
A seemingly angry Mr Trump in a quick rejoinder replied the Pope saying that he (the pope) will certainly wish and pray that he (trump) was president if Vatican is attacked by ISIS. He has called for swift, global action on climate change, emphasizing how it disproportionately affects the world’s poor and vulnerable. I think Mexico got him to do it because they want to keep the border just the way it is.
Hispanics, an increasingly large voting bloc in US presidential elections, have flocked to Democrats in recent years. Some Republicans have said they do not want to vote on a nominee, but would rather wait until the next president is elected.
CBS News White House correspondent Major Garrett reports that building a wall on the USA border with Mexico remains a staple of Trump stump speeches – an echo of the incendiary beginning to his campaign.
While Trump’s words have been among the most inflammatory, some of his rivals have staked out similar enforcement positions. Rick Tyler, a spokesman for Senator Ted Cruz, chose to avoid getting involved in the conflict.
“Avoiding pregnancy is not an absolute evil”, Francis said. However, some Catholics have grown disillusioned with the Pope because what many believe to be a weakening stance from the church on abortion and homosexuality, among others. He added that the pontiff has emphasized the need for bridges over walls in the past, including with the European migration crisis.
The small feud between Trump and the pope could have affected Trump’s poll numbers leading up to SC primary.
Trump v Pope… who wins?
Then again, Trump seems to adhere to the adage that any publicity – even that which is critical of him – is good publicity.
“I will do more for the African-American people than Barack Obama has ever done”.
