Vaughn Taylor snatches first win in 11 years with stunning 65

“It’s not good, but at the same time, I think I can get into a groove and not lose any hair over the back nine and just, I’m going to fire at some pins”. “I’m at a loss for words right now”. I kept getting knocked down, knocked down. I’ve had that putt (on 16) before.

It was a stunning conclusion for both. (That has its plus side, Taylor says: He avoids excess-baggage fees.) He is playing the Web.com Tour this season.

Things fell together for Taylor, while Mickelson fairly well fell apart after taking a two-shot lead into the final round.

Lefty still managed a rally of his own. Mickelson carded a two on the par-three No. 17, but missed the birdie putt on No. 18 that would have forced a playoff. His hybrid landed in front of the green, 60 feet short of the pin.

Taylor, 40, shot a 7-under final round to beat multiple major victor Phil Mickelson by a shot, after Mickleson had a five-foot putt lip out on the last hole. When the ball rimmed out, Mickelson bent over at the waist and stared down at the green in silence for a few seconds.

“It never crossed my mind that I wouldn’t make that one, and when it didn’t go in, I was a bit shocked”.

Taylor had never given up on his career, though he was starting to rule out another victory, and he never imagined returning home to Augusta, Georgia, to play in the Masters.

Taylor went out in 34 but it was after the turn that he really upped his game. I was missing a bunch of putts – short, long, mid, it didn’t matter.

“I can’t believe it happened again”.

“I was standing by the scoring trailer, and I thought he was going to make it”, he said.

He missed two good birdie chances on the last two holes, but still wound up a victor.

The fact that Taylor was even in the field at Pebble was something of a surprise. That’s no longer a problem. The Augusta, Ga., native will get a spot in The Masters in April. His victory check of $1.26 million Sunday more than doubled that, and it was by far the biggest payday of his career. Instead, he finished tied for fourth at 14-under with Freddie Jacobson.

“Events like this, AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, all the people watching on TV”.

Jonas Blixt was third at 15 under par. She also won the national championship in 2013 and 2015. He shot 72-65-73-65 and finished T6.

Taylor didn’t even realize he was in the Pebble Beach Pro-Am – he still has limited status as a past PGA Tour victor – until Monday when he was learned Cal Pettersen had withdrawn.

Langer completed his sixth wire-to-wire triumph.
