The VDCs were set up in Jammu and Kashmir in the mid-nineties following a number of violence on innocent inhabitants in far-flung villages. “National Conference not only demand a time bound magisterial probe into the incident but also urge upon the government to provide an exgratia of Rs 50 lakhs to the next of kin of the deceased National Conference leader”, he said.
“The voice of the youth leader was muzzled by killing him, he was raising voice against irregularities in the distribution of the CAPD ration in the area”, Rana said.
A case has been registered in connection with the matter.
When asked Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh is not in favour of disbanding VDC’s, Qamar Hussain said that an individual is not the sole authority. “The present government has been giving a free hand to VDC members”, said NC general secretary and MLA Ali Muhammad Sagar. “He and his rifle were later handed over to police”, police sources said.
The opposition parties, including NC, and some separatists have called for disbanding of VDCs in the past.
