This was the second Emmy win of David Nutter’s career (he previously won for directing Band of Brothers, also for HBO), and a nice feather in the cap of one of the show’s most reliable directors. “We’re all here because of the power of the stories that need to be told”. And at last week’s creative arts Emmys, the show also won for sound editing, single-camera picture editing, makeup, casting, stunt coordination, visual effects, special effects and production design.

He defeated Anthony Anderson, (‘Black-ish’), Louis CK (‘Louie’), Don Cheadle (‘House of Lies’), Will Forte (‘Last Man on Earth’), Matt LeBlanc (‘Episodes’), William H Macy (‘Shameless’) in the category.

Sometimes surprising winners and moments (Tracy Morgan returning to TV, and to present the Best Drama award!), and not excessively boring (the telecast even ended a minute early!), it was a fine Sunday night, especially if you were in any way associated with Game of Thrones, Veep, Olive Kitteridge, and …

Actor Peter Dinklage won outstanding supporting actor in a drama series and the show also picked up the prestigious outstanding drama series award.

Amazon Studios could be in for a big night with transgender comedy “Transparent”, whose star Jeffrey Tambor plays a divorced dad who decides to transition as a woman.

Game of Thrones“, HBO’s darling series, was a favourite this year as it bagged nods in all the 24 nominations. “You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there”, she said in an emotional speech after receiving her trophy. When Hamm first heard his name called from the stage, Funnyman Jon Hamm (as seen on 30 Rock and in Bridesmaids) stood and promptly decided to skip the stairs, instead opting to belly-flop onto the stage like a kid hoisting himself up out of a swimming pool.

Jon Stewart, the former host of The Daily Show had a fitting farewell with a final goodbye speech to the show’s team and audience while accepting his Emmy award. Iannucci, the show’s creator, left the show after its fourth season.

Viola Davis became the first African-American to win a drama lead actress Emmy for her role as a tough criminal defense lawyer in ABC’s “How to Get Away With Murder“.

Host Andy Samberg kicked off the ceremony with a musical video skit about the wealth of quality television now on offer, featuring several stars like Hamm and Kerry Washington, the star of “Scandal“. She won a guest actress award previous year for her portrayal of the series’ character known as “Crazy Eyes”. “Thank you for your courage”, he said.

And, collecting the gong, creator Ianucci said: “If Veep is about one thing it’s about hope, hope that anyone in America, no matter their background, their race, their creed, can just miss out on getting the top job”. Also winning big were perennial favorite “Veep“, which took outstanding comedy series, while limited series “Olive Kitteridge” won best limited series.
