Vegas and Langley, the first-round leader after opening with a 62, were tied at 9-under-par 131 on the par-70, 7,287-yard Old White TPC course.
Before this round, Woods was reckoned to be a 50-1 shot for the Open at the course where he won his first two Claret Jugs by a combined 13 shots.
Approaches lacked the correct distance, and Woods couldn’t buy a putt with Jim Justice’s money before finally rolling in a 6-foot birdie try on the home hole – his longest make of the day.
Woods is tied for 26, but only four strokes behind the leader, putting the 79-time PGA Tour victor in the mix for his first win since reeling off five in 2013.
Starting on the 10th, Woods carded birdies on the 12th, 15th and 16th before dropping his first shot of the day on the 17th to reach the turn in 34. And his 66-69 marks just the second time he’s signed for back-to-back round in the 60s; in the Masters he shot 69-68 in his second and third rounds.
Woods, who missed the cut at the Greenbrier in 2012, the only other time he has played the event, showed nearly no signs of the two-way miss off the tee that has marked his starts since he overcame the chipping yips earlier in the year. “I felt like I wasn’t very far away”, Woods said after his round.
Then all parts of his game came unraveled.
Andrew Landry (Arkansas Razorbacks) shot a 7-under 64 Thursday and leads after the first round of the Nova Scotia Open in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
“Oh yeah, I love it”, Oosthuizen said.
Woods drove out-of-bounds on the par-4 11th and made double bogey.
Giquel-Bettan fired seven birdies and one bogey at Buckinghamshire Golf Club to end the day one shot ahead of South African Ashleigh Simon, Italian Sophie Sandolo, Josephine Janson of Sweden and Nontaya Srisawang from Thailand. He had a pretty mellow round with only three birdies and a bogey to shoot two-under.
“I feel like I’m playing great”, he said.
Stallings and Blixt are back, along with 2014 champion Angel Cabrera and runner-up George McNeill.

Canadian David Hearn and American Bryce Molder carded 64s to join the group on 132, while England’s Greg Owen and Americans Chad Collins and Kevin Chappel posted second-round 67s.
