A spokesman for the New York Police Department says the victims had been trick-or-treating when a vehicle went onto the sidewalk and struck them. The three were among many people thronging city sidewalks on Saturday afternoon for annual trick-or-treat candy-collecting celebrations.

A 63-year-old man behind the wheel of the black Dodge sedan went careering into the group of pedestrians and then smashed through a fence in front of a home, police said. The girl who was critically injured was also taken to the medical centre.

Eyewitness News is told at least half a dozen trick-or-treaters and their families never had a chance to get out of the way.

A 24-year-old man, another man and a 10-year-old girl were killed in the crash, police said.

A man, whose age wasn’t immediately available, died at the scene, police said. Authorities believe the driver hit another vehicle before it lost control and jumped the curb.

A 3-year-old girl whisked away from the scene was also at Jacobi in critical condition.

A woman is in the hospital after she hopped into a police auto and crashed it into another police cruiser, injuring a police officer.
