A search was underway Thursday for a man who kidnapped a year-old boy from a recycling center, although the infant later turned up unharmed.

Caleb Castro and his two sisters, ages 4 and 6, were inside a red Honda Odyssey parked at SA Recycling, 1545 Gage Road, at about 3 p.m. today, when a man ordered the two girls out and drove away with the boy still inside, according to Montebello police. The missing child has been identified as Caleb Castro.

“One-year-old Caleb Castro, who was a passenger in the red 2003 Honda Odyssey minivan when it was stolen, was found safe inside the minivan almost four hours later after it was abandoned outside a Pico Rivera McDonald’s restaurant, according to police”.

A spokesman for Montebello police said the department has requested that an Amber Alert be issued in the case.

The suspect approached the parked vehicle, while three children sat in the auto.

‘Their mother stepped away – approximately 10 feet and was going to recycle some items. He’s about 2 feet tall and weighs 22 pounds, police said. He was last seen wearing black and gray trousers, black socks, and a Mickey Mouse shirt.

The thief drove off in the minivan, which had the keys still in the ignition, police said.

The man being sought in connection with the crime was said to be 30, Hispanic, with spiked hair.

The mother screamed that her baby was in the vehicle, but the man took off south on Gage.
