Based on a preliminary investigation, police say the child’s mother left her son in the auto unattended and the keys in the ignition while she went into work.

TWO THIEVES STOLE a vehicle which had an 8-year-old boy still inside, then dropped the child to school before making their escape.
While the mother of the boy was no doubt frightened beyond belief and we’re therefore sympathetic, she could maybe learn a thing or two about responsibility from these two auto thieves, should police ever find them.
When she came outside around 8 a.m.to take her son to school, her Chevy Impala-with her son still inside-was gone.
Hudson says the boy told police that the men asked him which school he attended.
Investigators spent the day reviewing surveillance footage from the post office, processing the vehicle for evidence, and canvassing neighborhoods, but as of Monday evening, Hudson said they had developed leads, but still had not identified any suspects.
Police say they found the boy unharmed at school, and the auto was abandoned about 3 miles away.
Meanwhile, police said the mother could face charges.

Detectives are continuing to investigate this incident.
