Lilian Tintori – whose husband was sentenced in September to almost 14 years in prison for inciting violence during mass anti-government protests last year in which dozens were killed – said Thursday that she was near Diaz when the shooting occurred and may have been the target of the attack.
Both President Nicolas Maduro’s government and the opposition accuse each other of harboring a violent agenda.
South American regional bloc UNASUR, which has sent a mission to observe the election, condemned Diaz’s killing.
It called on global authorities such as the European Union and the Vatican to urge the Venezuelan government to openly reject violence.

Tweeting her condolences to the family of Mr Díaz on Thursday, Ms Tintori said: “Tomorrow I will denounce in detail the terror, harassment and violence being inflicted on us by the regime”.
The Venezuelan authorities, nevertheless, stated preliminary investigations advised paid killers had murdered Diaz in a battle between gangs.
