Verizon dumps service contracts

Good news for existing Verizon customers: You’ll still be able to get discounted phones for $100 or $200 by renewing a two-year service contract. However, switching over to the new plans is permanent – users can not go back to their old plans should they decide to drop out of the new one. At the outset, you’ll pay more on Verizon’s new plans than you would have with a two-year contract. This is particularly so for higher data plans.

In addition to the monthly data fee, you’ll still have to pay a monthly access fee of $20 for a phone, and $10 for a tablet or mobile hot spot.

The company says the move comes after customer surveys indicated that people are looking for simple options and no contracts. The $20-charge will also be automatically applied for every line connected after the upgrade date. Using 3 GB of data would save you $25 a month and using 1 GB would save you $20.

Verizon, along with T-mobile is dropping contracts and discounted phones for their new customers.

By eliminating two-year smartphone contracts for new customers, Verizon is adding transparency to what was a pretty opaque process. Now, customers will now how much they are really paying for and what exactly they paying for. That’s an average savings of $3 a month. The 2-gigabyte option won’t be available under the new plan, so you’ll be paying $9 more to get 3 gigabytes – when you need less. This means Edge plan customers should also switch to the new plan to save more. The new plan of offered by the nation’s biggest wireless company is cheaper than the existing Edge plan.

If you are a new customer, it would be best to b opt for the larger plans. The new plans will no longer have down payments, annual contracts, and activation fees. When you upgrade to a phone at a discounted price, you have the option to choose from either a voice plan with a standalone data package or The Verizon Plan.
