Verizon launches its Go90 mobile video app and sharing service

Samsung is killing off its Milk Video streaming service in November, but now a new video streaming option has surfaced to replace it.

The service, first launched into beta last month, is available free of charge through an ad-supported model using AOL’s ad-tech platform.

Verizon promises more than 35 exclusive original series and over 8,000 titles for Go90 at launch and expects to double it by the end of this year, according to the company users will find 15 of the 30 most-viewed network shows and 9 out of 15 most-viewed shows on the internet.

In terms of content, go90 offers content from The Daily Show, Food Network, IGN, DreamworksTV, Nerdist, Vice, Elite Daily, AwesomenessTV.

The go90 lineup also will include Univision News and content from its Flama digital network and, for Verizon Wireless customers, live Liga MX soccer matches.

The free, short-form video service will drive revenue from data usage and targeted advertising from well-known brands.

After a few time working out the kinks in beta testing, Verizon’s Go90 video service is officially available to the public today. “Brilliant coders and engineers and awesome content partners have invested an incredible amount of work and have taken care to create a video experience that until now has been missing for millennial and Gen Z viewers”, said Brian Angiolet, Verizon’s go90 architect said in a statement. It also looks like the carrier is looking to challenge Snapchat, which has already partnered with entertainment and news content providers.

Go90, which refers to the act of rotating a mobile device to watch video in landscape mode, is Verizon’s play at capturing the attention of millennials. Engadget speculates that it may just be a matter of time until the service becomes available for set-top boxes, smart TVs and other streaming-capable devices.
