Because of these inherent interconnection issues, it is irrelevant for any consumer to benefit for paying a premium for high speed internet. The salads sold in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and New Jersey were sold prepackaged, in salad bars, in chef’s cases and in sandwiches and wraps prepared in the stores.

In letters to the state’s three major Internet providers, the attorney general has asked them to validate claims their customers are getting the access speeds promised, especially for premium services.

New York City is a competitive market, and broadband companies battle for customers by offering ever-better speeds to handle a proliferation of networked devices such as computers, video game systems and Internet-enabled televisions.

The attorney general’s office is seeking each provider’s total broadband customers since 2011, grouped by service levels. The letters warned that the speeds Verizon, Time Warner Cable, and Cablevision offer “may deviate far enough from the speeds advertised to render the advertising deceptive”. The three companies being scrutinized have each asserted that their services are properly priced, and each will co-operate with the investigation.

The inquiry will be led by Tim Wu, the lawyer and professor known for coining the term “net neutrality”.

“Many of us may be paying for one thing, and getting another”, Schneiderman said in a statement. “We look forward to working cooperatively with the attorney general’s office”.

“Optimum Online consistently surpasses advertised broadband speeds, including in FCC and internal tests”, spokeswoman Sarah Chaikin said. The study, along with consumer complaints prompted the Attorney General’s probe.
