Verlander, Tigers lose 7-2 to Red Sox

Much like his debut against the Yankees, Owens showed many areas that still need work, but Detroit’s batters struggled to make solid contact.

“Going into this game I thought my last few starts I was overthrowing so going into this one I told myself to take it a couple of gears down and try to make my pitches”, Greene said. He walked four, but allowed just one run and three hits.

The Tigers hit three home runs in their 8-6 win versus the Royals on Thursday, their 12th game this season with at least three home runs after totaling 10 such games in the entire 2014 campaign.

Henry Owens (1-1) pitched five-plus innings for his first major league win. He also only allowed one run on four hits and two walks and added a strong nine strikeouts.

“Its good to get that out of the way, ” he said. “It was good to get these first two out of the way, get my first win, set my shoulders back and take a deep breath”.

One trade from 2014, when the Red Sox acquired Rodriguez from the Orioles, seemed to have paid off through his first three starts.

Jackie Bradley Jr. was on fire Sunday, leading the Red Sox past Justin Verlander and the Tigers.

That was the only big blemish on Verlander’s day, which saw him dance around softly hit infield singles and shoddy defense behind him over six innings. But I was more concerned that Rutledge could do damage, as opposed to Bradley getting walked. I wasn’t trying to hit corners there. “I think he was just off”. But the Red Sox put the game away with four runs off Ian Krol in the eighth. Weve gotta get outs in the bullpen. With Ortiz proving he can still be a contributor on offense, he’ll likely be in the lineup more days than not, leaving designated hitter as a non-option for John Farrell (or whoever is managing the Red Sox) to hit the likes of Ramirez, Sandoval and others. 200 and it was lefty vs. lefty.

With Uehara heading to the disabled list, the Red Sox will now be able to recall reliever Ryan Cook, obtained in a cash deal from Oakland at the trading deadline.

Though scans on Ramirez’s foot came back negative Saturday, he continues to move around at less than 100 percent and will be forced to sit for the second consecutive game. But after the pain in the 40-year-old’s wrist failed to subside even after the swelling went down over the weekend, Uehara was sent home to Boston for additional tests, which disclosed the break.

Uehara was struck by a grounder hit by Detroit Tigers’ Ian Kinsler.
