At least 17 people were injured in clashes between supporters and activists of the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) and local residents in different parts of the capital today, police said.
Stating that the indigenous people of Tripura have been curtailed the right to live freely in their home State due to dominating immigrants, Ningthouja Lancha said that such threat to the indigenous people should not be taken lightly by all the right thinking people. There was a scuffle in the rally.
Retaliation by the non-tribals followed soon when news about the attack on the mother-child duo spread far and wide.Official sources said Section 144 of the CrPC had been imposed in Agartala to thwart any untoward incident.
Several vehicles were damaged and set a blaze.
According to ANI, the clashes started when two women and a child were attacked by the IPFT supporters when the trio tried to cross the rally. Later, police rushed to the spot and dispersed the irate mob and send all the injured persons to GB Hospital.
The IPFT, a tribal based party, today took out a procession in the city demanding “Twipra land” – a separate state for the tribals – by carving out the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) from the state. “However, the situation could be tackled with the initiative of the peace loving people and patience exercised by security forces”, he said at the civil secretariat here.
In reaction of group of hyperactive youths severely beat four tribal youths in front of Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan and burnt one jeep.
The IPFT’s demand was rejected by nearly all political parties, including the ruling Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M).
