Veteran QB Whitehurst set to join Browns

Cleveland has often tried to fix its quarterback problems with high draft picks (Kentucky’s Tim Couch went first overall in the new Browns first draft in 1999) as well as veterans who didn’t pan out (Griffin) elsewhere.

The Browns have signed veteran quarterback Charlie Whitehurst, according to a tweet made by his agents at SportsTrust Advisors late on September 19.

Kessler will be the Browns’ fifth starting quarterback in the team’s last five games dating back to previous year, and the 26th quarterback to start for the team since 1999. When the Browns opened a 20-0 lead in the first quarter, Flacco didn’t flinch and helped Baltimore score 25 consecutive points. “We are going to figure something out, I promise you that”, head coach Hue Jackson said during his Monday media availability.

Which pretty much sums up the way the Browns view Cody Kessler getting the start for the Browns Sunday in Miami. He planned to play against the Dolphins but won’t get the chance. Kessler twice warmed up during Sundays game, but McCown stayed on the field despite taking several hard hits. The 34-year-old has gone 2-7 in nine National Football League games. Pitta missed most of the preseason with a finger sprain. Kessler did get some snaps with the first team in practice last week. Jackson said the team will look to add a veteran to its roster, but the job for now belongs to Kessler, who struggled during training camp and the exhibition season.

“I don’t know if it could stunt his growth”, Jackson said. But there are also mid-round choices that were supposed to be developmental projects which either never panned out or got thrown to the wolves too early or… well, both. “It is more of a deep sprain at this time than anything, but I don’t think there is anything totally broken”.

Kessler was a surprise pick in the third round by the Browns, who chose to pass on the top QBs in the draft.

“Its a physical game and you always have to be ready, ” he said. “Here we go, right?”

Jackson asked for trust when it came to developing Kessler. That day, when Kessler was a surprise third-round pick, Jackson finally grew tired of questions and said: “You have to trust me on this one”. “We will see what that statement was all about”.

“I see what Dennis is doing, and man, I’m inspired. If that did happen, I had the mindset of going in as the starter”.
