Veteran runner Pierre Thomas signs with the 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers are signing Pierre Thomas, according to his agent, Lamont Smith, on Twitter. He’s a proven vet heading to a team whose starter, Carlos Hyde, is injured. The Niners announced the deal later Tuesday. Thomas, who spent eight seasons with New Orleans and is the fourth-leading rusher in Saintshistory with 3,745yards, also posted a picture of himself holding up a 49ers jersey on Instagram.

In Sean Payton’s offense, Thomas piled up at least 300 receiving yards during five separate seasons.

Thomas was released by the Saints in March and was not on a team during training camp or the preseason. He rarely dropped passes.

Although Thomas is on the wrong side of 30, he’s never been a high-usage back.

Although he was snubbed when it came to invitations for the National Football League scouting combine, Thomas has forged a solid National Football League career. Thomas rushed for only 222 yards and two touchdowns last season in 11 games, but he averaged 4.9 yards per carry.
