He said his grandfather fought in Iwo Jima during World War II, and had two uncles fought in Vietnam.
There are more than 20 million American veterans, many of whom are suffering or in need of assistance. Since that time, there has been a trend away from business and school closings in observance of the holiday. For those born after the war, the series provides a snapshot of the times only the veterans can offer. It was called Armistice Day for the next 30 plus years until a Kansas shoe storeowner named Al King had the idea to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, not just those who served in World War I. By act of Congress, November 11th has been Veterans Day ever since.
Nationally, the VA says, there are 22 million USA military veterans, with just over 2 million of those being women. In Georgia, we have 90,000 women who are veterans, about 12 percent of the state’s overall veteran population, and 282,000 veterans who are 65 or older, about 37.5 percent. A number of veteran groups report that another 1.4 million veterans are at risk for homelessness.
On this Veterans Day, 2015, we salute all veterans in our immediate and extended families, and our many friends and their relatives who served our country so valiantly in these foreign-combat operations.
“My mom came home that morning and saw the auto, saw the officers, and she knew without even being told what had happened”, Dagger said.
On behalf of the entire Leading Points team, We Thank You and your Families for your Service! Like their forefathers, these young men and women put their lives on the line simply because their country said they were needed.
The United States has played a singularly vital role in the history of the world over the past century, whether it’s been through military engagement that often determined the fate of a war; economic leadership which has had ripple affects through almost every nation on earth; or as the nation that so often gives money, resources, and support to the poor and needy around the world. In these Asian conflicts, there was no enemy surrender as at the close of World War II. MSU continues to take great pride in recognizing Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11, as a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.
Today we join the rest of the nation on Veterans Day with a simple message to all veterans: Thank you.
