Veterans help Kentucky thwart Louisville’s second-half rally
“They do know this is who we have to be and how we have to play”.

What makes the in-state showdown even more intense are the high-profile, Hall of Fame coaches on both sides – Louisville head coach Rick Pitino and Kentucky head coach John Calipari.
Louisville’s Damion Lee (0) drives against UMKC’s Dashawn King (1) during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game, Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2015, in Louisville, Ky.
Sunday’s game should be really mediocre.
You count out a Pitino team at your peril, though, and sure enough, the Cardinals fought their way back into the game. A rugged, physical game with another home team again enjoying the benefit of the doubt on the physical aspects of the game. We just didnt execute down the stretch. The Cardinals (11-2) had a chance to tie or take the lead with less than a minute left, but Trey Lewis was called for traveling. What a game! Then Kentucky’s Dominique Hawkins hit a 3 for a 73-68 United Kingdom lead with 2 minutes left. Kentucky played Louisville coming off a loss to Ohio State the previous Saturday. (It) cleared their minds.Alex Poythress scored 14 points for Kentucky.
Poythress led the run with seven points, including six straight early in the second half.
Guard Isaiah Briscoe was the one who went down with that injury, having tried to continue after rolling his ankle on a teammates foot. He has only had a couple of workouts and Calipari has been coy about whether he’ll play Saturday because he’s a work in progress much like the Wildcats. “That’s what he did”, Calipari said. Calipari is the second-fastest coach in Division I history to reach 200 wins at a school, hitting the mark in his 240th game at Kentucky.
I wonder if Pitino has any illusion that his life is going to get any better when he goes on the road in the ACC. Kentucky coach John Calipari has skipped postgame press conference’s before.
And while Murray continued his trend of heating up in the second half – hitting three 3-pointers after intermission Saturday – he also remained ice cold in the first half. The Wildcats have made 31.3 percent of their 2-point jump shots and 29.7 percent of their 3-pointers, per hoop-math.com.
Second, he avoided almost all media interviews afterward, doing just his post-game radio show with Bob Valvano and leaving assistant coach Ralph Willard to handle the other duties.
Pitino, too, said the dreaded bird was not involved.
Kentucky’s victory was an encouraging way to end an up-and-down non-conference season.
Pitino gave United Kingdom credit for the win, in particular for some long-range sharpshooting.

That’s because it appeared Pitino gave the middle-finger salute to booing Kentucky fans as he exited the court – although it is hard to tell for sure from the grainy footage. Kentucky came into the game shooting 29% from three point land and do they do that in this game?
